A Bright New Finish!

When we first moved into our townhouse we were able to furnish every room in the house with at least a few pieces of furniture that we snagged for... well, free! Lucky for us my parents had recently downsized there home and were happy to give us anything they didn't have room for. (For weeks their basement looked like a furniture warehouse!) They had a strict return policy, "take whatever you want, but don't bring anything back," aka: no returns allowed.

My husband's parents also donated some great pieces to our cause. One such piece is this classic round pedestal table with a dark finish. We love the table, its shape and size are perfect for our space. They bought this table when they were first married (over 30 years ago!) and it had already been handed down to Erin and her hubby when they first bought their home. Well, it found it's way into our home and by then it had acquired a few bumps and bruises. That's why we decided to give this classic old table a facelift with a fresh coat of paint. Here is the before picture:

We figured that since the stain was so dark and we wanted to paint it white, we would need to sand it down so the color would really stick. In doing so we discovered that this little treasure was a purchase from Ethan Allen. (Wow, great taste!) No wonder it has been able to withstand the test of time. Here is a shot of our work in progress:
And at last, the big reveal. We sanded, primed, painted, and polyurethaned the table and are thrilled with the results. I found a set of black schoolhouse chairs at Pottery Barn and admired the lines, however the price tag wasnt working for me. So I ventured over to Target.com and found a similar set from their Adams Dining Collection for way less. What do you think? Did we breathe a new life into an old table, or will our children be "refinishing" this table back to it's original finish 30 years from now?

I love the black and white together it's a great combo. If you get sick of the table in that room you can always use it anywhere in the house, white is always neutral and versatile! The black chairs will last forever, good work:)

Oh my gosh! We have the exact same table and chairs, handed down from my parents that they bought 25 years ago!! That is crazy! I'm not a big fan of it at all but I haven't had the energy to redo it yet. One day!
